Combat Bloodstream Infection Rates with Streamlined EMRs

HIMSS Analytics recognizes Rochester Regional Health for their status as a Stage 7 hospital, as tracked by the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) SM

Every year in the U.S., approximately 250,000 central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) occur. The severe form of blood infection increases a patient’s risk of contracting additional diseases, and can lead to death in more serious cases. The CDC estimates more than $1 billion is being spent treating CLABSI, with an estimated cost of $16,000 per patient event.

Rochester Regional Health recognized the major risks posed by CLABSI and strategized internally to establish process improvement objectives. Their internal goals included reducing overall bacteremia rates, as well as reducing documentation time for staff, all while maintaining focus on improved accuracy of central line data within their EMR (electronic medical record).

Through sharing best practices for central line management with staff, the organization was able to improve turnaround time of CLABSI data reporting and calculate and reconcile discrepancies more efficiently. As a result of these efforts, Rochester Regional Health achieved a 65 percent reduction for central line-associated bacteremia rates from 2015-2017.

As of 2017, Rochester Regional Health achieved a rate of 0.35 infections per 1000 central line days (down from 1.0 per 1000 in 2015) with zero infections in July and August – all by maximizing their data usage and streamlining workflow routines through their EMR.

HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Validation

HIMSS Analytics is proud to recognize Rochester Regional Health for their recent validation as a Stage 7 hospital system, based on the EMRAM (Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model). Less than seven percent of acute care facilities nationwide have earned this coveted designation.

“Achieving HIMSS Analytics EMRAM Stage 7 designation is a tremendous achievement for Rochester Regional. It is the result of continuous collaboration and commitment across all levels of our healthcare organization to deploy and utilize an integrated, comprehensive paperless electronic medical record (EMR) system,” said John Glynn, chief information officer and executive vice president of Rochester Regional Health. “Our transformation away from the reliance on paper has allowed us to significantly reduce potential medical errors and ultimately provide safer, more efficient, cost effective and higher quality of care for our patients.”

“Rochester Regional Health has accomplished an excellent deployment of a comprehensive acute care EMR, which has been the stitching that has helped created a unified health system from disparate hospitals. The case studies of quality and efficiency improvements are among the best we have ever seen,” stated Philip Bradley, regional director of North America for HIMSS Analytics. “Not only have they shown that they achieved key performance indicators—their quantitative analysis in case after case showed tremendous cost savings and revenue generation enabled by their investment in health IT tools. We congratulate Rochester Regional Health in achieving Stage 7 status for acute care EMR adoption.”

HIMSS Analytics will recognize Rochester Regional Health at the 2018 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, held from March 5-9, 2018, at the Venetian-Palazzo-Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
