Congress Returns from Recess, Work on Health IT Issues Continue

Congress returned from the August recess on Tuesday facing a number of looming deadlines, including the renewal of federal funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and reauthorization of several Medicare “extenders” by the end of September.

On the health IT front, we’re closely watching several legislative proposals that would seek to expand Medicare reimbursement for telehealth services, including H.R.3178 - Medicare Part B Improvement Act of 2017, H.R.1148 - FAST Act of 2017, and S.870 - Creating High-Quality Results and Outcomes Necessary to Improve Chronic (CHRONIC) Care Act of 2017. By the end of September, Congress will also need to pass a bill to fund the government, raise the debt ceiling, and provide disaster relief funding in response to Hurricane Harvey. In the lead up to National Health IT Week (October 2-6, 2017), the HIMSS Congressional Affairs Team will continue to provide updates on the state of play on Capitol Hill.
