Dr. David Shulkin and LaVerne Horton Council confirmed as new U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Leaders

On June 23, 2015 the Senate confirmed two new U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) leaders; Dr. David Shulkin as the Under Secretary for Health and Ms. LaVerne Horton Council who will serve as Assistant Secretary for Information Technology.

Dr. Shulkin brings a wealth of experience to his new position as he held the position of President at Morristown Medical Center, Goryeb Children’s Hospital and Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute, which are part of Atlantic Health System. Prior to that role, he served as President and CEO of Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, where he led a financial turnaround and rebuild of the $1.3 billion organization.

The Under Secretary will direct a health care system with an annual discretionary budget of approximately $60 billion, overseeing the delivery of care to more than 9 million enrolled Veterans.

Ms. LaVerne Horton Council most recently held the positions of CEO at Council Advisory Services, LLC and Chair of the National Board of Trustees for the March of Dimes. Ms. LaVerne Horton Council previously served as a Johnson and Johnson Vice President and CIO, where she was responsible for managing a $61.6 billion IT related systems at Johnson and Johnson worldwide, and has held several other positions at Dell and Ernst & Young.
