Educate and Elevate: Certified Revenue Cycle Representative from the Healthcare Financial Management Association

Joseph Abel, CPCC, ACC, PhDThe competitive advantage that any organization possesses is its talent. Now, more than ever, talent effectiveness has become a universal business priority. Organizations need competent, capable employees who know what to do, how to do it, and when. Building talent effectiveness at a foundational level means educating employees so they have the knowledge, skills and aptitudes needed to perform their job responsibilities. But business today requires more than strong position skills. The “more” required is professional practice expertise that fosters cooperation and collaboration resulting in increased service and value to patients. Talent effectiveness positions employees as business partners and requires elevating fundamental knowledge and skills to the highest levels of expertise.

The Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) is the Healthcare Financial Management Association's (HFMA) professional certification of front line staff. HFMA’s CRCR Certification:

  • Validates staff skills and knowledge;
  • Enhances your organization’s credibility with the public;
  • Supports professional development and career planning;
  • Demonstrate a high level of commitment to the field

Additionally, the CRCR certification program provides the necessary framework to help set standards of performance and build technical expertise across the entire revenue cycle. CRCR certification is recommended for hospital revenue cycle staff and associated departments including Patient Access; Patient Accounts; Health Information Management; Billing Department; Case Management: Compliance: Decision Support; Finance; Financial Representatives and Managed Care Operations.

HFMA’s professional competency framework provides the CRCR Certification program’s content structure. This competency architecture allows organizations to build the professional expertise required for cross-functional, collaborative endeavors that improve patient satisfaction.

The CRCR certification offers online learning in seven interrelated professional practice areas: Compliance, Patient Access, Claims Processing, Account Resolution, Cash, Financial Management and Revenue Cycle Departments/ Required Competencies, i.e., knowledge, skills and aptitudes required in the different functional areas are addressed in each throughout the CRCR program.

Among the more powerful applications of CRCR certification is the creation and implementation of career ladders. The competency framework and corresponding online learning are effective instruments for demonstrating ability leading to career advancement. Such application allows organizations to develop skills and competencies, and ultimately, cultivate top talent.

HFMA’s CRCR certification is designed to increase talent effectiveness. Developing employees not only increases their capability for achieving business goals but also provides them with the tools to develop their careers.
