Health IT Policy Committee reviews IPPS NPRM, Advanced Health Models, Big Data

On Tuesday, June 30, the Health IT Policy Committee, a Federal Advisory Committee to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), convened for a virtual meeting. Paul Tang, Vice Chair, gave opening remarks and took a moment to thank Devin McGraw for her service on the committee and to wish her luck as she transitions to her new role as the Deputy Director for Health Information Privacy at HHS in the Office of Civil Rights.

The meeting continued with presentations from the Quality Measure Task Force and the Advanced Health Models and Meaningful Use Workgroup.  The Quality Measure Task force reviewed the Inpatient Prospective Payment System NPRM, with their recommendations focused on the ONC proposal for a 2015 Edition CQM reporting certificate criterion and standards, and early comments on new measures utilizing clinical data elements in the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) program.

The Advanced Health Models (AHM) Workgroup provided discussion following recent hearing on the topic, and focused their recommendations on policies that support AHM ability to address holistic health issues. The recommendations put forth by both groups were approved by the committee. To close, the Privacy and Security Workgroup presented a draft version of their Big Data Report with a focus on privacy and security issues, specifically those considered harmful, surrounding the use of big data and what approaches should be explored to protect this data.

Several Policy Committee Task Forces will be working over the summer including the Quality Measurement Task Force and the Clinical, Technical, Organizational and Financial Barriers to Interoperability Task Force, a newly created task force to address barriers to interoperability that will provide input to ONC. The Health IT Policy committee will have their next virtual meeting on Tuesday, August 11.
