Improved Discharge Times Increase Patient Satisfaction

Novant Health Selected as 2017 HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award Recipient

CHICAGO (September 22, 2017) – It is safe to say that no one likes waiting – especially at a doctor’s office or hospital. Inevitably, each patient is eager to return home after recovering from surgery or medical treatment.

Delayed discharge times leave many patients and families frustrated, and other patients in need of care waiting longer for treatment. Novant Health recognized this as a pertinent issue, and maintained focus on resolving it while keeping patients front of mind.

At Novant Health, team members and leadership work to provide quality patient care throughout the full healthcare experience – starting at patient admission and leading up to patient discharge, as well as follow-up care.

Improved Discharge Rates

Novant Health introduced its strategy for combating delayed discharge rates with the adoption of an enterprise EHR to implement more effective processes and communications among team members. Working towards a solution, the information technology services, provider, nursing, therapist and case management teams utilized their enterprise EHR to develop intuitive workflows, seamlessly collecting all relevant patient information needed in one convenient location.

This improved workflow made possible the discharge of one patient in a fraction of the time that paper records would allow resulting in:

reduced discharge times,

increased accuracy of durable medical equipment orders, such as hospital beds, wheel chairs, diabetes self-testing supplies, etc., for patients’ post-acute care, and

improved patient satisfaction.
