Improving Patient Outcomes Starts with the EMR

As healthcare organizations across the nation are increasing their focus on value derived from patient care, Loma Linda University Medical Center embarked on their own journey to improve patient outcomes by leveraging digital health innovations into their workflow.

One of the initiatives launched by the organization aims to help providers and pharmacists improve the ability to conduct complicated calculations to reach effective use of vancomycin, an antibiotic to treat infections. Loma Linda University Medical Center began by programming calculations into patients’ EMR to help ensure faster delivery of information and more consistent results in reaching goal blood levels. After thorough staff training and positive results shown from trial runs, the organization has begun implementing the new process across all of their Children’s Hospital units. Though a work in progress, the ongoing results clearly display a major uptick in improved goal blood levels for patients who were treated using the calculations.
