Lahey Health Leverages EMR Tools to Tackle Opioid Epidemic

HIMSS Analytics recognizes Lahey Health for their status as a Stage 7 hospital, as tracked by the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) SM

As healthcare costs continue to rise, rates in Massachusetts rank higher than any other state in the nation. Lahey Health has worked through these financial challenges while also maintaining focus on the organization’s core values: care delivery in the most clinically appropriate and cost-effective setting, without compromising quality.

HIMSS Analytics is proud to recognize Lahey Health for their recent validation as a Stage 7 hospital on both the EMRAM and O-EMRAM (Outpatient Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model). This accomplishment highlights the organization’s major strides towards embracing the value of health IT to streamline patient care in a consistent and more efficient manner.

“With Lahey Health’s thorough deployment of electronic medical records, they have developed a comprehensive care environment. Their uniformity of system use is a testament to their enterprise commitment to using their EMR to drive improvements in care quality and efficiency, equally on the inpatient and outpatient basis,” stated John Hoyt, Stage 7 lead at HIMSS Analytics. “The clinical leadership at Lahey has begun to use EMR tools to tackle the opiate epidemic, which is a model for many other enterprises to follow. We proudly validate Lahey Health as HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 for both acute care & ambulatory care.”

Lahey Health's leadership have begun to use EMR tools to tackle the opiate epidemic, which is a model for many other enterprises to follow.

The organization leveraged its EMR and related technologies and developed an approach to improve overall prescribing practices and the identification and management of opiate dependent patients. Interventions included:

• implementing documentation tools and workflows for opiate therapy consent and contracts,

• enhancing patient education and outreach processes, and

• building reports to identify chronic opiate therapy patients.

The Lahey Health team used data from these reports to drive patient outreach and proactively engage patients in reducing dependency through education, opiate agreement contracts and referrals for treatment. As a result of these efforts, Lahey Health reduced overall opiate prescriptions by 19%.

“Achieving HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 across the full care continuum validates the breadth and depth of Lahey’s adoption of our electronic medical record and related technologies,” said David Reis, PhD, senior vice president and chief information officer, Lahey Health. “This is confirmation that our platform strategy of partnering with leading technology providers has us on the path for success in an all-digital healthcare paradigm. We look forward to building on the HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 recognition and continuing on the path of innovative digital healthcare technology that is interoperable, scalable and sustainable now and into the future.”
