Wearing my HIMSS Foundation hat to give you an update on the more than 10 scholarship opportunities available this year! Founded in 1996 to advance the HIMSS mission of advancing health through IT, the Foundation works with our members and chapters to award scholarships to HIMSS student members who have achieved academic excellence and have the potential to be future leaders in the healthcare information and management systems community.
The HIMSS Foundation has presented thousands of scholarship dollars in three major categories to students from all parts of the health IT community:
- Foundation-supported scholarships represent four scholarships awarded annually to students – one each at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels – as well as the annual Richard P. Covert, Ph.D. LFHIMSS Scholarship for Management Systems. Dr. Covert is a former director of the American Hospital Association, who ran HMSS from 1978-89. I was fascinated to rediscover an interview with Dr. Covert from the HIMSS Archives talking about the pre-I days!
- Chapter-supported scholarships are developed in partnership with several of our HIMSS chapters and administered by the HIMSS Professional Development team. Last year, South Florida, Arizona, Northern California, and Virginia chapters of HIMSS awarded five scholarships.
- Veterans Career Services scholarships also offer a beneficial partnership between our chapters and professional development team. Chapters fund scholarships for veterans to attend HIMSS Annual Conference to introduce the veterans to the HIMSS community and the health IT profession. We’ve had the good fortune of having scholarships funded by the National Capital Area, New York State, Oregon, and Virginia chapters.
The education scholarships and HIMSS Annual Conference ‘career development’ scholarships are valuable tools for the HIMSS Foundation to fortify the link between our current membership and future health IT leaders. To date, we have supported the educational advancement of more than 50 recipients in the health IT community.
And this August, we expanded our commitment to furthering the future of health IT with the launch of the Steve Lieber Innovator Scholarship. A student pursuing a degree from an accredited collegiate undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral academic program will receive this prestigious scholarship. Winning submissions will embrace the use of digital health or technology-enabled workflow innovation in support of the HIMSS mission of better health through information technology.
