Making the Move Towards the EMRAM at HSHS-Eastern Wisconsin Division

HIMSS Analytics recognizes HSHS-Eastern Wisconsin Division for revalidation of their status as a Stage 7 hospital, as tracked by the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) SM

CHICAGO (September 18, 2017) – Hospital Sisters Health System- Eastern Wisconsin Division, which includes HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay; HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan; and HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls, now uses an inpatient clinical dashboard within its electronic medical record system for real-time monitoring of patient care. Dashboard metrics are displayed at the unit level and include everything from preventive care such as influenza immunization to blood clot prophylaxis. This allows nurses to see patient status at a quick glance and impact care in a timely manner. Following up on opportunities identified by the dashboard has helped vastly improve patient care.

The rate of immunizing eligible patients prior to discharge went from 90% to nearly 100%.

HSHS-Eastern Wisconsin Division revalidated their HIMSS Analytics EMRAM Stage 7 status in 2017, as part of their mission to promote wellness and foster healing to all. By embracing health IT within their practices, they have raised the bar for quality patient care and have streamlined their care regime for both patients and staff in a mutually beneficial matter.

“Since their initial Stage 7 validation, HSHS–Eastern Wisconsin Division has aggressively expanded their use of quality indicators on dashboards to help direct the staff to overwhelmingly achieve their pay-for-performance quality and patient satisfaction targets,” stated John Hoyt, HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 lead. “The staff has embraced the idea of monitoring key performance indicators that are presented real time allowing physicians and nurses to compare themselves individually and as a unit.”

Leadership teams at HSHS-Eastern Wisconsin Division know that their support and encouragement of highly reliable process design within the EMR is a hallmark of colleague satisfaction and patient safety. “We are proud of this ongoing recognition and the dedication our colleagues demonstrate each day toward differentiating our hospitals from most others in the nation,” stated Shane Miller, chief information officer at HSHS-Eastern Wisconsin Division. “This award highlights the pledge by our staff at all four ministries to our mission and values while also underlining our commitment to providing our patients with the highest quality of care. We will always strive for absolute perfection while still protecting the productivity of our staff in a safe and secure environment.”

John Hoyt of HIMSS Analytics, encourages other organizations to make the move towards EMRAM, with high hopes that other organizations will see similarly impressive results. “HSHS has truly moved to the next level of using the EMR to drive clinical quality improvements,” Hoyt stated. “We congratulate them as being revalidated as a HIMSS Analytics acute care Stage 7 organization.”
