Massachusetts State HIE Patients Access Medical Records Electronically

Under a new law that was made effective on January 1, 2017, Massachusetts patients are now able to access their medical records electronically. The law, which was signed by former Governor Deval Patrick (D) of Massachusetts in 2012, launched the Mass HIway, one of the first statewide Health Information Exchanges (HIE) in the country. The publicly-supported HIE enables the secure electronic transfer of clinical and other relevant patient health data among organizations, including hospitals, doctor offices, pharmacies, laboratories, skilled nursing facilities, and other healthcare entities. The Connect to the Mass HIway enables healthcare information exchange and promotes the HIE requirements for Meaningful Use.
