New AHRQ Director Named

The Trump Administration has named Gopal Khanna to lead the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) within the Department of Health and Human Services.

Mr. Khanna previously served as the CIO for Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty between 2005 and 2010 and the CIO of the Peace Corps under President George W. Bush. He also has been a member of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) Health IT Standards committee and worked for the Healthcare & Human Services Innovation Incubator in Illinois.

This announcement coupled with this week’s Senate confirmation of Scott Gottlieb as the new FDA Administrator means they join Don Rucker and John Fleming at ONC, Roger Severino at the Office for Civil Rights and Seema Verma at CMS, as the heads of the Department of Health and Human Services agencies that are most engaged with on health IT.
