NIH Awards $55 Million for Precision Medicine Initiative

On Wednesday, July 6, 2016, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that it will award $55 million in FY 2016 to help build the infrastructure for a million-person study that is needed to launch the Cohort Program of the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI). In the announcement, NIH Director, Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, stated that, “The more we understand about individual differences, the better able we will be to effectively prevent and treat illness.” PMI volunteers will be asked to contribute a wide range of health and lifestyle information and grant access to their clinical data from electronic health records.  The Cohort Program launch is expected later this year with an aim of meeting its enrollment goal by 2020.
