Patient Engagement Improves Patient Care and Satisfaction

HIMSS Analytics has recognized UCLA Health’s achievement of the highest level of the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) SM

CHICAGO (October 25, 2017) – For more than 50 years, UCLA Health has provided innovative healthcare and the latest in medical technology to the people of Los Angeles and the world. Their electronic medical record system aligns patients and clinicians with information resulting in reduced duplicate lab tests and unnecessary testing. In addition, this digital connection ensures all care-team members, including the patient, have access to the latest lab results and treatment information.

Identifying these and other patient-focused benefits, HIMSS Analytics has recognized UCLA Health’s achievement on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) SM, which tracks EMR progress at hospitals and health systems.

UCLA Health achieved O-EMRAM SM Stage 7 and revalidation of EMRAM SM Stage 7, which is the highest level of achievement on the EMRAM SM. This model recognizes facilities operating in a near paperless environment and representing best practices in implementing the electronic medical record.

“Reaching and maintaining Stage 7 not only highlights our commitment to maximizing the use of health IT to provide optimal patient care; it has also become a requirement to attract and retain the best and brightest minds in health,” said Dr. Michael Pfeffer, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer.

The system-wide implementation of UCLA Health’s online patient portal benefits both patients and staff; it helps reduce medical errors, protect patients, and improve accessibility and transparency of data. The health system also established a Patient-focused Technology Council to provide patient and family feedback to the informatics department for applications used at UCLA Heath. This patient-caregiver dialogue has provided actionable insights to continually grow and improve technologies to meet the needs of patients.

“Through our efforts to engage our patients at UCLA Health, we have found patient satisfaction is higher when organizations make it more convenient to access, share and understand diagnoses and treatment plans,” says Kevin Baldwin, MPH, PMP, CPHIMS, informatics portfolio manager, UCLA Health.

“UCLA Health is a role model for others striving to achieve HIMSS Stage 7,” said John Daniels, CNM, FACHE, FHIMSS, CPHIMS, global vice president, healthcare advisory services group, HIMSS Analytics. “The UCLA clinicians’ use of the EHR is among the best HIMSS has seen.”

HIMSS Analytics will recognize UCLA Health at the 2018 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, held from March 5-9, 2018, at the Venetian-Palazzo-Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Visit the HIMSS Analytics website for more information on the healthcare provider maturity models and Stage 7 award.
