HIMSS Analytics recognizes MetroHealth System for their revalidation as a Stage 7 hospital, as tracked by the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM)℠ and the Outpatient Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (O-EMRAM)℠
Hepatitis C (HCV) is a common virus, and poses major risks as it starts off as asymptomatic. As a result, many cases are not detected until it reaches advanced stages, often leading to liver failure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone born between 1945-1965 be screened for HCV once in their life. Taking into account the dire outcomes that patients can face as a result of undetected symptoms, MetroHealth decided to implement an internal program focused on increasing HCV screens among patients.
In three of their primary care clinics, MetroHealth used population health tools embedded in their electronic medical record (EMR) to identify patients due for HCV screenings. With the help of these tools, staff were able to order screening tests for patient as quickly as the click of a button. The EMR would automatically send a detail message to the patient’s personal health record (PHR) describing HCV and encouraging the patient to schedule their screening test at one of their testing labs.
As a result of these efforts, over 100 more patients were screened. Two asymptomatic patients who tested positive for HCV were able to immediately begin treatment before suffering from the disease’s advanced stages, which means two livers were potentially saved thanks to efficient follow-up from staff at MetroHealth.
HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Validation
HIMSS Analytics is proud to recognize MetroHealth System for their recent revalidation as a Stage 7 hospital, as tracked by the EMRAM (Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model) and the O-EMRAM (Outpatient Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model).
“We are proud to be continuing to lead the way in high-quality, patient-centered and technology-enabled care," said Dr. David Kaelber, MD, PhD, MPH, Chief Medical Informatics Officer at MetroHealth. "Being among the first healthcare systems to achieve and be revalidated as a HIMSS Stage 7 organization, acknowledges MetroHealth's leadership and commitment to pushing the use of electronic health records for the benefit of our patients, our healthcare system, Northeast Ohio, and beyond."
“There are many capabilities and services offered by MetroHealth System. What I found most notable is the delivery of these services to patient populations that are often overlooked. They have deployed their EMR tools to the County Jail, for all foster children, and they have a focus on the LGBT community. This is an impressive service to your community,” said Philip Bradley, regional director of North America, HIMSS Analytics.
HIMSS Analytics will recognize MetroHealth System at the 2018 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, held from March 5-9, 2018, at the Venetian-Palazzo-Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Visit the HIMSS Analytics website for more information on the healthcare provider maturity models and Stage 7 award.
