CHICAGO (October 23, 2017) – In the American Academy of Pediatrics Recommendations for Preventive Pediatric Health Care, consistently scheduled wellness visits are defined as key to maintaining pediatric health.
Kressly Pediatrics recognized the importance closing adhering to these recommendations, and decided to use them as a framework for maximizing patient outcomes through an internal initiative to improve wellness visit rates. In order to achieve this, the organization set internal goals to transition from reactive to proactive population health management internally.
As a start, the organization decided to expand the use of their EHR. Capitalizing on the EHR’s clinical decision support capability, they explored additional functionalities to drive further scheduling efforts, such as integrated patient message exchange systems.
HIMSS is proud to recognize Kressly Pediatrics for their achievement of the 2017 HIMSS Ambulatory Davies Award.
To further meet patient needs in meeting this goal, the organization
• conducted regular, consistent outreach regarding preferred dates and times for wellness visits,
• surveyed families to uncover trends in availability, based on age groups and more to assist in expanding wellness visit hours to better accommodate families, and
• included school holidays in internal calendar to anticipate higher-volume scheduling needs.
As a result, wellness visit rates rose from 66% in 2013 to 93% in 2016. In accomplishing this goal, Kressly Pediatrics improved overall patient care through the implementation of these updated best practices, which led to less last-minute stress in scheduling for the staff, as well as increased revenue from wellness visits.
“My dream of creating a practice where I could develop meaningful, ongoing relationships with patients and their families, use technology to make us efficient and accessible, and use data to drive improvement has become my life’s greatest joy. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch the practice grow and be appreciated by the community we serve,” stated Susan J. Kressly, MD, FAAP, in response to learning Kressly Pediatrics had received the 2017 HIMSS Ambulatory Davies Award.
