HIMSS Analytics recognizes Nemours Alfred I duPont Hospital for Children for their validation as a Stage 7 hospital, as tracked by the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) SM
Late one night, Hope McCarthy was asleep at Nemours while her toddler, Murphy, slept in his inpatient bed, just feet away from her. As she had dozed off, all seemed to be well with her son.
Sometime a few hours later, a Nemours paramedic detected trouble. He was not at the child’s bedside, but in the Nemours Clinical Logistics Center—a high-tech hub that allows medical professionals to remotely monitor patients. This paramedic saw signs of distress in the little boy’s vitals and was instantly able to radio into the room. He requested video permissions, observed what was happening and immediately pushed out an alert and the Rapid Response team was deployed.
“This team of people were in the room, treating our son within seconds,” said Hope McCarthy, the two-year-old Murphy’s mother.
Experienced paramedics staff the Nemours Clinical Logistics Center around-the-clock, monitoring inpatients at the Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del. and Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. They provide an added set of eyes and ears to the care team on the patient floors.
The paramedics have access to each patient's electronic medical record (EMR), which includes lab work, patient history, and specialty clinic reports — all of which paramedics can easily access from one virtual location. The resource, which is possible through the EMR, provides an extra layer of security and acts as additional eyes and ears for care teams — and for parents.
In the case of Murphy McCarthy, the paramedics spotted a seizure before the alarms in the room even awoke the boy’s mother.
“They prevented more damage from being done, because they noticed so quickly and responded so fast,” said Hope McCarthy. “We will be forever thankful for the team at Nemours for what they’ve done.”
