Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee reviews MHS GENESIS Implementation

On Wednesday, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense held a hearing titled “Review the Defense Health Program & Military Medicine Funding.” The hearing examined various aspects of the Military Health System (MHS), including the military’s progress toward implementing its new EHR system, MHS GENESIS. MHS GENESIS is an integrated inpatient and outpatient EHR that will provide patients and caregivers a modernized EHR containing medical and dental information.

Ms. Stacy Cummings, Program Executive Officer for Defense Healthcare Management Systems provided testimony on MHS GENESIS, which DoD launched in February at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington with world-wide implementation by 2022. During her testimony, Ms. Cummings highlighted the improvements MHS GENESIS will bring to the DoD including “improved data sharing with the VA and private sector healthcare partners […] advanced analytics and an online patient portal that will increase efficiencies, improve care outcomes, and allow patients to be more engaged in their care decision.”
