Kevin Nortrup, CPHIMS, CSEP, will receive the 2018 SHS/HIMSS Excellence in Healthcare Management Engineering and Process Improvement Award, presented at the Healthcare Systems Process Improvement Conference in February
CHICAGO (January 19, 2018) - For the past several years, Kevin Nortrup, CPHIMS, CSEP, has been involved with the Society for Health Systems (SHS) and HIMSS, sharing his systems-thinking and systems-engineering expertise, as it applies to management-engineering and process-improvement (ME/PI) in healthcare. He strives to coordinate and unify the technology-based efforts of HIMSS with the process-based efforts of SHS, within the framework of systems thinking and enterprise systems engineering.
Nortrup has championed the modeling, design, analysis, troubleshooting, and remediation of healthcare (technology, institutions, even the industry itself) as a complex sociotechnical system of systems. In fact, his passion for management engineering and process improvement stems from his work in healthcare systems engineering. His consulting company, Sugar Creek Solutions, provided the hardware, software, systems, application and field engineering to facilitate interoperability of multi-vendor systems in the patient room.
Kevin Nortrup has endeavored to create awareness and unofficial liaisons between organizations, all toward the goal of improving the process and the outcomes of healthcare.

In addition to HIMSS and SHS, he is an active member IISE (Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers, parent organization of SHS), and INCOSE (International Council on Systems Engineering), and has presented at conferences hosted by these organizations.
For these accomplishments and more, Kevin Nortrup is the recipient of the 2018 SHS/HIMSS Excellence in Healthcare Management Engineering/Process Improvement Award.
The joint award honors individuals who have best demonstrated leadership in implementing significant synergies between the process improvement and information technology professions and recognizes individuals who have made contributions of a professional or technical nature, which may include research or development of improved processes (with or without technology), or exemplary contribution to the professional society. The SHS and HIMSS Boards of Directors jointly select the recipient of this award.
“Congratulations to Kevin Nortrup on being the 2018 recipient of the SHS/HIMSS Excellence in Healthcare Management Engineering and Process Improvement Award,” said Ashley Benedict, president, SHS board of directors. “It is rewarding to celebrate a member each year that is identified through SHS and HIMSS as a leader, innovator, and contributor. Kevin embodies the spirit of both organizations and contributes his knowledge and skills towards moving healthcare improvement forward. He is a dynamic presenter who is in regular attendance at both annual conferences and always willing to share on webinars. Congratulations, Kevin.”
“As a board member and programs director of the Indiana Chapter of HIMSS, Kevin chaired the 2017 Midwest Fall Technology Conference, an annual collaboration of six regional HIMSS chapters. His ongoing focus on effective collaboration between our organizations has made important and positive difference because he acts on aligning our efforts to improve health and healthcare with IT and process improvement,” said Carla Smith, MA, FHIMSS, CNM, executive vice president, HIMSS North America.
Kevin Nortrup, CPHIMS, CSEP, will be honored during the Healthcare Systems Process Improvement Conference 2018, Feb. 21-23, in Atlanta, Ga.
He also will be recognized at the HIMSS18 Awards Gala on Thursday, March 8, from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Wynn Hotel inside the Latour Ballroom, during the 2018 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition on March 5-9 in Las Vegas, Nev., at the Venetian-Palazzo Sands Center.
