In 2015, the TIGER International Committee, with representatives from 21 countries, began comprehensive activities to compile recommendations for core international informatics competencies reflective of multiple countries, scientific societies, and research projects.
The TIGER International Committee has completed the first round of an innovative competency synthesis project that highlights recommended core international informatics competencies.
This endeavor includes three components:
- Compilation of international case studies submitted by Committee members from Finland, Germany (inclusive of Austria and Switzerland), Ireland, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Portugal that reflect country-specific competencies based on country requirements, curriculum, and education.
- Development of a survey that launched on Nov. 23, 2015, to evaluate and prioritize a broad list of core competencies. Based on the results of this survey, TIGER will identify the core informatics competencies of healthcare professionals in five domains:
- nursing management;
- IT management in nursing (e.g. nurse informatics officer);
- quality management;
- interprofessional coordination of care; and
- clinical nursing.
3. Creation of a competency harmonization matrix that outlines shared and country-specific competencies (including the United States) to provide guidance to the TIGER community, and beyond.
“This endeavor aims to provide practical competency recommendations that are flexible, comprehensive, and can be utilized in many countries comprised of different settings and cultures. At this time, we are moving through an international consensus-building process. In the end, we will harmonize a final matrix of core competencies associated with the interprofessional roles and working domains,” said Dr. Ursula Hertha Hübner, professor of health and human services informatics, University AS Osnabrück, Health Informatics Research Group in Osnabrück, Germany, chair of the TIGER International Committee.
The Committee is taking a unique approach with this project, since it’s the first to collect various competencies across countries to identify global commonalities and differences. Finally, harmonization will help determine how the Committee moves forward in the future.

TIGER has gathered six case studies and will host webinars in spring 2016 that will be available in the TIGER Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Members of the TIGER International Committee members will facilitate the webinars.
