VA Releases RFI on VistA Modernization

On November 16th the Veterans Administration (VA) released a new request for information (RFI) on proposals on modernization of the VistA electronic health record.  While VA’s health IT leaders have shown some interest to move to a commercial system, the RFI is not for VistA replacement but rather for preparing VistA in a way that may end up leading to such a replacement.

The RFI seeks to identify solutions and services to standardize the disparate VistA application instances, to update its FileMan API, to segment and isolate its business logic layer, to consolidate its six regional data centers into a cloud environment, and to close gaps in VistA security.
