What a Difference the Patient Portal Makes

CHICAGO (June 7, 2017) –Dottie Kaplan, a resident of Allentown, Penn., began using Lehigh Valley Health Network’s patient portal soon after her physician’s office launched this online resource. The active 81-year-old says improved communication is, in her opinion, the best feature of the interactive portal known as MyLVHN.

“You can ask a question and get an answer right away. If you are having an issue, you can ask what to do – how to adjust medication or what to do about a symptom and get an answer within a day,” she says. “It’s so much more efficient to send an email via the portal and get an email back at the doctor’s convenience. I also think it helps build a positive relationship between the doctor and the patient.”

Stage 7: Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) achieved Stage 7 on both the HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) ™ and the Outpatient EMRAM – or O-EMRAM at its Lehigh Valley Physician Group (LVPG) practices. Only 4.8% of US, non-governmental hospitals and 9.9% of outpatient facilities (as of Q4 2016) have reached this designation. The eight-stage (0-7) model measures the adoption and utilization of EMR functions; Stage 7 represents a near paperless environment with technology that supports optimized patient care.

LVHN operates at Stage 7 for its acute care and outpatient facilities that include eight hospital campuses in eastern Pennsylvania; 18 health centers caring for communities in seven counties; numerous primary and specialty care physician practices and 12 ExpressCARE locations. “The transition to an integrated EHR and achieving EMRAM Stage 7 was not just an information technology task. The Stage 7 designation was achieved by thousands of LVHN colleagues across two LVHN hospital campuses and 150 LVPG ambulatory practices,” says Mike Minear, senior vice president and chief information officer at LVHN. “Their adoption of the best practices needed to manage patient care in a modern digital record is the key. Today our patients experience more coordinated care across all of Lehigh Valley Health Network, and now – whether home or away – every LVHN patient can easily connect with their health information and providers using the MyLVHN patient portal.”

“Lehigh Valley Health Network asked that we sit in on a daily huddle during our EMRAM survey visit. What we saw was a daily huddle that uses a real-time dashboard to allow leadership to make needed changes immediately. This is an innovative use of data analytics making a positive impact,” said Philip W Bradley, regional director, north, HIMSS Analytics.

In the review of the LVHN outpatient clinics, Bradley noted the development of a dashboard for OB/GYN clinicians. “The dashboard not only provides key clinical information, but also and more impressive, it suggests staffing levels based on the number of pregnancies that will be due in coming weeks and how many of those are high risk, which require a different level of staffing.”

Lehigh Valley Health Network will be recognized at the 2018 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition on March 5-9, 2018, at the Venetian – Palazzo – Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas.
