The healthcare industry is recognizing that it is critical to have diverse talent representation and inclusive workplaces to create solutions that meet the needs of all populations. Private/public partnerships are working collaboratively to identify in-demand skills and to influence academic curriculum and energize the creation of degree programs to help keep up with the tech talent pipeline demand and to ensure that the digital economy doesn’t leave underrepresented communities behind.
How we hire, retain and advance talented individuals from underrepresented communities is an essential consideration to drive widespread, effective innovation. Employers and economic development agencies are becoming creative and using foundation funds and other economic development funding to invest in innovative education pathways including coding bootcamps, STEM camps, online certification programs and employer upskilling initiatives to help bridge the talent gap in data science, software development and design.
For organizations to be successful in attracting talent from broader backgrounds, it’s essential to think of how we’re adapting our message and how our corporate culture prepares to welcome employees from diverse backgrounds. Change management strategies play a necessary role in preparing organizations and setting them up for success. Leaders must paint a vivid picture of the end state and take the time to explain why inclusion matters to ensure essential buy-in from the entire organization including the c-suite, HR, managers and staff.
Once an organization has successfully attracted diverse talent, mentorship plays a big role in ensuring that staff doesn’t feel isolated. Having an advocate within the organization who isn’t simply a role model but someone who is intentional about actively participating in career development and working together to address issues such as stereotype threat, imposter syndrome and managing up.
Ultimately this matters as we consider how all humans interact with technology and how we design systems to support patients from every background. Diversity provides different perspectives which result in richer, more creative and more innovative solutions to improve health outcomes for all.
