Using Data to Improve Outcomes Case Studies

Provider using data to improve outcomes

Banner Health was named a 2018 HIMSS Davies Enterprise Award recipient for leveraging the value of health information and technology to improve outcomes, as evidenced in three use case submissions below. The three use cases topics covered include reducing unnecessary blood transfusions through bundle compliance, increasing critical care coverage through virtual care and going paperless at 40+ Banner urgent care centers acquired in 2017.

Case Studies

1. Bundle Compliance for Blood Transfusions

Banner Health created a strategic initiative to reduce unnecessary blood transfusions in the hip and knee which contribute to patient harm and waste. The purpose of this initiative was to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes and reduce costs. The utilization of clinical analytics, electronic order sets, and clinical decision support in the electronic health record (EHR) helped to increase bundle compliance and decrease the rate of blood transfusion in this population.

2. Virtual Care: Increasing Capacity to Deliver Highly Reliable Care

Banner Health provides an additional layer of care to over 700 patients a day with the utilization of advanced surveillance technology called TeleICU which leverages A/V technology, predictive analytics, data visualization and advanced reporting that enabled Banner to increase critical care coverage and deliver highly reliable care. 3. Urgent Care: Integrating Point of Care Service into a Longitudinal Health System

In 2017, Banner Health elected to move from a paper-based patient record to an EHR at 40+ newly acquired urgent care centers. Banner also put in consumer-focused capabilities, such as online check-in and scheduling. Implementation of the urgent care EHR optimized the management of patient throughput, decreased time patients spent in the clinic, decreased the time spent completing documentation and improved overall satisfaction for clinicians and patients.
