HIE Shows Cost Savings in Emergencies
Beyond improving the quality of emergency care, giving physicians access to data from a health information exchange saved nearly $2,000 per patient during a study unveiled by the American College of Emergency Physicians. The research tracked patient care over a 12-month period, starting February 2012, during which there were 325,740 patient encounters and 7,525 log-ons to the HIE by 231 eligible clinicians at 11 emergency departments in South Carolina, according to ACEP. The study was based on a sample of 532 patients from this population who had information available in the HIE and for whom the clinicians caring for the patients completed a survey. POLICY PIPELINE

Health IT Activities Resume With Reopened Government
After 16 days of inactivity at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), federal agencies reopened their doors on October 17. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) continued to allow for meaningful use attestation during the shutdown, but there were questions around how long it would take attesters to receive their payments. The Health IT Policy and Standards Committees (HITPC and HITSC) both missed October meetings and Workgroup activities; meetings are tentatively scheduled to resume on Monday, October 21. Click on the headline to read the full HIMSS article on the effects of the government shutdown.

Interoperability Interchange*

VIEWPOINT: Big Data: Farming vs. Mining
By Derek Ritz, P.Eng., CPHIMS-CA
Perhaps we need to revisit our Big Data metaphor. Rather than thinking about data mining, we should be thinking instead about data farming. As any farmer (or preacher) can tell you: you reap what you sow. Soberingly, the corollary is also true: you don’t reap what you don’t sow. How does this relate to Big Data analytics and to whether the US is frittering away a golden opportunity? To put it bluntly, it means that for America to realize the promise of Big Data analytics in healthcare, there must be pervasive adoption of eHealth standards and HIEs. Click on the headline to read Derek’s full opinion piece on Big Data.

BLOG: Facilitating Interoperability
By Brian Klepper, Health Affairs
A Health Affairs report on health information interoperability by staffers of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) provides a good enough summary of the situation. But it also is not news, and falls under the Bob Dylan Rule: You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows. From the article: “In general, limited interoperability across vendors, low motivation to share information in a fee-for-service payment environment, and the high cost of interfaces remain substantial barriers to widespread health information sharing.” Click the link above to read more.
