What’s New

Healthcare Business Intelligence Forum Early Bird Ends Jan. 31.
Early bird registration rates for the HIMSS Media and Healthcare IT News Healthcare Business Intelligence Forum ends Jan. 31. This two-day event will focus on best practices for leveraging health data and analytics to improve both clinical and business efficiency of healthcare organizations. The forum will be held at the Renaissance Washington Hotel in Washington DC, April 16-17.

Spring 2014 JHIM Seeks Abstracts on ‘Big Data’ and Pop Health Management
The Spring 2014 Journal of Healthcare Information Management will focus on Big Data and Population Health Management. JHIM is seeking abstracts on these and other areas of health IT. JHIM accepts original research, case studies, and literature reviews on any and all topics related to health IT. Please submit a word document with a 250-word synopsis of your paper. Include a working title and contact information for all contributors for the paper. All abstracts will be reviewed and decided upon once the call for abstracts closes. ONC SAFER Guides Outline Best Practices
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) released the Safety Assurance Factors for EHR Resilience (SAFER) Guides as part of the HHS Health IT Patient Safety Action and Surveillance Plan, which was issued in July 2013. The guides outline best practices for health care organizations to implement and utilize electronic health records and reduce the chance of an adverse event.

Senate Committee Reviews Government Employee Travel and Participation in Conferences
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee held a hearing Jan. 14 on “Examining Conference and Travel Spending Across the Federal Government.” HIMSS submitted a statement for the record emphasizing the importance of federal employees engaging in continuing public dialog with industry and other stakeholders on important public policy issues, challenges, and advancements in topics such as health IT.

NEW! CDC Releases Report on Physician EHR Adoption
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a new data brief—"Use and Characteristics of Electronic Health Record Systems Among Office-based Physician Practices: United States, 2001–2013." The brief also reports trends on "physicians' intent to participate in the EHR Incentive Programs and their readiness to meet 14 of the Stage 2 Core Set objectives for meaningful use in 2013."

Results of the 2013 HIMSS Compensation Survey are in, leading to the loaded question “Are you being paid what you’re worth?” Some of the findings aren’t too surprising. In general, men earn more than women, company heads have the highest salaries and almost every respondent receives some type of benefit from their employer. The surprising points are found when you compare bonuses, raises and salaries among positions, regions or businesses. All HIMSS members have access to an exclusive salary calculator in which they can compare salaries for key healthcare IT positions, by region, gender, years of experience and other variables.

HIMSS is recruiting an Innovator in Residence to develop a vision, strategy, and implementation plan for the near-term deployment of consistent patient data matching in health that builds on the body of work from HHS’s Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) and healthcare community partners. The person hired for this two-year opportunity will be a HIMSS employee who will work onsite in the office of the HHS Chief Technology Officer, to foster further collaboration with stakeholders across the healthcare community and in collaboration with ONC.

The HIMSS Davies Public Health Award program has opened a call for submissions by public health organizations that have utilized innovative health IT-enabled workflows to improve population health. The Davies Public Health Award highlights the link between improvements in population health and health IT. Submission of case studies to the HIMSS Davies Public Health Award Program requires that applicants submit information which describes how implementation of their and EHR enabled changes in workflow improve the population health of the community they serve. Case Studies will be highlighted on the HIMSS Davies Award and HIMSS Value Suite websites and the HIMSS Blog. Jonathan Wald, MD, MPH, FACMI, director, patient-centered technologies in the Center for the Advancement of Health Information Technology at RTI International, has more than 20 years’ experience in medical informatics and consumer-facing technologies. Wald’s work in academic, corporate and research settings includes clinical systems design, development, usability, and policy. His publications are focused on chronic conditions; preventive health; process improvements; patient computing; electronic medical records; personalized medicine; and technology adoption. Wald’s primary interest is technology use by patients and providers to improve communication, clinical decision support, clinical outcomes, and the patient care experience. For 10 years, he led patient portal development and design at Partners HealthCare, Boston. Wald is a fellow at the American College of Medical Informatics and is a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty.
