This project developed methods and measures that can be used to quantify the public benefits that result from Interoperable Health Information Exchange (IEHI). Findings include that the current empirical evidence on the public benefits associated with IEHI is limited and proposes a strategy to develop IEHI use measures that enable robust evaluation of the impacts associated with IEHI.

President Trump announced a wide-ranging policy initiative aimed at confronting the forces of supply and demand that are fueling the country’s opioid epidemic, including cutting nationwide opioid prescription fills by one-third within three years.

What does this initiative call for?

Everything Interoperability

Ron Ribitzky, MD, and Heather Flannery, members of the HIMSS Blockchain Work Group and contributing authors to the inaugural edition of the Blockchain in Healthcare Today (BHTY) journal, summarize the perspectives they shared in their BHTY article around considerations, including privacy, security and technical factors, for the application of distributed ledger technology within the healthcare setting.

Why is this technology potentially so disruptive?

Cerner sees its EHR system emerging as a technology platform for a plethora of apps that leverage HL7’s emerging Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources standard, enabling physicians to access these pluggable apps directly within their workflow to more easily visualize, interact and transmit health data.

HIMSS Interoperability Champions and Supporters are those organizations who support nationwide, ubiquitous, secure electronic exchange of health information. For many years, HIMSS and our valued collaborators have worked relentlessly to ensure individuals and organizations can routinely use secure, trustworthy, interoperable technologies and work flows to promote wellness and improve the health status of patients and populations. While we’ve made much progress, and entire careers have been spent creating the building blocks, our work is not complete.
Now is the time for bold action.

During the last year, HIMSS North America has been exploring blockchain technology to better understand its potential impact on HIMSS and the broader digital health landscape. Join Mari Greenberger MPPA, Director of Informatics at HIMSS, as she provides a primer about how blockchain functions. The inaugural HIMSS Blockchain Work Group is also highlighted, who are currently working to help equip HIMSS members with crucial information about current applications of blockchain in healthcare and its implications for the future of electronic health information sharing.
