Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
Jump into this month’s issue of Clinical Informatics Insights as we delve into the wonderful world of APIs. What is an API? How are Open APIs changing the internet? Also, two informaticists offer solutions on usability barriers that prevent health IT from supporting clinician needs.

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY
A Perspective on Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)

Stu Rabinowitz, MBA, Director of Federal Markets and Channel Partners, Socrata & HIMSS Clinical & Business Intelligence Committee Member and Amy Yeung, Data Management Analyst

From a health care organization (HCO), health researcher, or patient perspective an API is the glue that enables the ability to connect systems and data. If one uses their mobile phone to access their insurance claims, for example, that transaction makes use of an API.

Meet an Informaticist
Five Usability Barriers Preventing Health IT from Supporting Clinician Needs

By David M. Schlossman, M.D., Ph.D., FACP, M.S. (Informatics), CPHIMS and Nancy Staggers, PhD, RN, FAAN

Current health IT does not adequately support the way doctors and nurses work or think, as evidenced by suboptimal designs, diminished cognitive support and lack of interoperability which hinders team-based care coordination across the continuum.

Health IT Policy and Standards Committees Discuss MACRA and Task Force Recommendations
The API Task Force co-chaired by Josh Mandel with Harvard Medical School and Meg Marshall with Cerner Corporation presented final recommendations from the Task Force to the Joint Committee. The recommendations were broken down into 8 generic use case topics: Types of apps and organizations who provide them; app registration; endorsement/certification of apps; communication of the app’s privacy policies; patient authorization framework; limitations and safeguards on sharing; auditing and accounting for disclosures; and identity proofing, user authentication, and app authentication.

What is an API?
Here is a 3:24 second video that does a wonderful job explaining what an API for those of us who need a little help!

The Untapped Potential of Health Care APIs
From the Harvard Business Review:  The first paragraph was intriguing—“Leaders of most internet-based businesses have realized the critical importance of using open application programming interfaces (APIs) to expand the reach of their organizations. If the health care industry followed suit, the impact on the quality and cost of care, the patient’s experience, and innovation could be enormous.”
