Research Informatics is a Team Sport
By Michael Miller, MD, Director of Research Informatics at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago

Earlier in my career, I became intrigued with electronic medical records as a way to accelerate sharing information among health care providers. As much as I love pediatric rheumatology, I had been thinking of balancing my clinical activities with administrative work, to me another way of contributing to patients' health.
The Research Lens of CII
By Vitaly Herasevich, MD, PhD, MSc, FCCM, CPHIMS, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Medicine in Department of Anesthesiology, Mayo Clinic

Until recently, Medical Informatics was in shadow of other areas of healthcare. More specifically - bedside applied Clinical Informatics was the prerogative of commercial companies and was mostly focused on medical devices and hardware.

Telehealth and associated Technologies

Telehealth and associated technologies and applications offer a platform for the exchange of medical information between patients and providers leading to diagnosis and treatment.

By Cheryl D. Parker, PhD, RN-BC, FHIMSS, Chief Nursing Informatics Officer, PatientSafe Solutions, Inc. and Pua Cooper MSN, RN, CMUP, Director of Nursing & Clinical Informatics, Boca Raton Regional Hospital

Trying to compare informatics education possibilities is truly an apples/oranges endeavor. The following information was based on an unscientific comparison of the information found on multiple university websites.

The Political Challenges We Face
By Neal Neuberger, Executive Emeritus of the HIMSS Foundation, Institute for e-Health Policy.

The political challenge we face: it has less to do with the substance of various "e-health" strategies going forward than it does the practical political realities of legislating in a highly charged pre-election year environment.

A growing number of patients are admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) in the United States. This patient population, representing the sickest subset in the hospital, requires a level of care that is resource-intensive and extremely costly.

Leading Through Change: Steve Lieber Reflects On His Time With HIMSS
When Steve Lieber saw a job posting 17 years ago for president and CEO of HIMSS, he was intrigued. He saw an organization that had the potential to usher healthcare out of the dark ages and become an industry leader. Meet the Editor of The HIMSS Health IT Dictionary, Fourth Edition (Part 2): From Nursing to Interoperability and HIE
I started out as a RN working in Public Health Nursing. When the hospital was looking for someone to help implement the new computer system in the hospital, I volunteered because I thought it would be fun. Little did I know that it would end up being my career! Read full story.

The following list includes my personal favorite tools for working remotely and do not imply a recommendation from HIMSS or my employer, PatientSafe Solutions. These are ones that I find so valuable, that I pay for them myself. (MAY 2016 Issue)

TripIt Pro
If you travel in your job, this is a great application.  It consolidates all my travel information into one place that is easy to read. It also gives my husband one place to check for my travel information rather than various emails. The alternate flight information with current number of empty seats is invaluable.

Last Pass
Too many passwords and multiple devices to use them on?  I love Last Pass to generate and/or store our very large numbers of password.  My husband and I use the same account.  Also have the logon information for this application in our estate paperwork for our heirs.

Phrase Express
Find yourself typing the same things again and again?  My academic self loves Phrase Express--think autocorrect on steroids.  When I am grading, I can create drop down menus by categories like APA formatting comments, writing style and by assignment.

Pixie: The Ultimate Colour Picker
I create a fair number of presentations and I like to match colors properly.  This freeware is so easy to use--get the hex, RGB, HTML, CMYK, and HSV values that you can use in PowerPoint, Word etc. to get those colors just right.
