Wearing Many Informatics Hats
By Dr. Maxine Rand, DNP, MPA, BSN, RN-BC, CPHIMS, Director of Clinical Education, Practice and Informatics at Kaiser Permanente.

My transcendence into clinical informatics was unexpected. I was a director for multiple clinical and support services for Kaiser Permanente and utilized our ambulatory clinical documentation system to review emergency department summaries for neurosurgery patient transfers or repatriations.

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY
Application Programming Interfaces (API)
By Stu Rabinowitz, MBA, Director of Federal Markets and Channel Partners, Socrata & HIMSS Clinical & Business Intelligence Committee Member

In my June 2016 article on Application Programming Interfaces (API), I defined APIs as specifications that detail how software components should interact, and APIs provide the technology to power graphical user interfaces (GUI). From a health care organization (HCO), health researcher, or patient perspective an API is the glue that enables one to connect systems and data.

HIMSS NEWS

Quick Take: CMS Finalizes MACRA/Quality Payment Program Regulation
To get to a Final Rule, CMS solicited and reviewed over 4,000 public comments and had over 100,000 physicians and other stakeholders attend its outreach sessions, so they could listen to concerns and educate the community on the direction for the new program.  CMS intends for QPP to reward the delivery of high-quality patient care through two avenues: Advanced Alternative Payment Models (Advanced APMs) and the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) for eligible clinicians or groups under the physician fee schedule (PFS). Quick Take: ONC Issues Final Rule on Enhanced Oversight and Accountability of Health IT Certification Program
The final rule creates a regulatory framework for ONC to directly review health IT certified under the Program, if there is a reasonable belief that certified health IT may present a serious risk to public health or safety or if certified health IT could present practical challenges for ONC-Authorized Certification Bodies (ONC-ACBs). Additionally, it allows ONC to take appropriate responsive actions to address potential non-conformities. Read full details

The call for HIMSS17 Poster Sessions is still open! Don't miss your chance to tell your story. Posters should explore the ways that organizations are utilizing different types of data.  Examples might include; how organizations are incorporating patient generated data at the point of care, how organizations are taking data from within the health system and making it usable/meaningful to the end user or even how the use of data has been impactful on different populations of health. The physician poster presentation sessions will be held February 19, 2017 in Orlando, Florida in tandem with the AMDIS/HIMSS Physicians' Executive IT Symposium. Please contact Karla Shao with any questions.

TOOL BOX PICKS

By Cheryl D. Parker, PhD, RN-BC, FHIMSS, Chief Nursing Informatics Officer, PatientSafe Solutions, Inc.

For the first time in my years of doing this section, I'm going to change things up a bit in light of this month's topic. Instead of links to various sources, I am going to share with you three of the non-academic courses that have served me the most in my career as an informatics nurse specialist - in and outside of a healthcare setting. These classes were 2-5 days long and helped my career more than many of my academic courses!

  • The first was a class I took in using behavioral styles to learn better ways of working with people. We started by learning about our individual behavioral styles based on our own assessment and more interesting, the perception of others which was not always the same as the way we perceived ourselves. Then the class taught me how to quickly assess the behavioral style and needs of others so that I could adapt my style to help meet their needs and we could get to a win-win.
  • The second class was a sales class. While I have never been a "sales" person, each of us sells every day. We sell our ideas to others; sell them on supporting us, and so on.
  • Last was a course on negotiation skills.
All of the classes had some overlap but the knowledge and practice sessions have been invaluable. I strongly recommend to my students that they invest their time in these types of course and recommend the same to you.
