Federal Affairs

CCHIT Announces New Direction and Alliance w/ HIMSS; Will No Longer Offer ONC Testing/Certification
This week, CCHIT announced a new strategic direction that will return it to its founding public mission of supporting the adoption of robust, interoperable health information technology.  CCHIT plans to offer direct counsel to both healthcare providers and health IT developers on the requirements for certified EHR technology and how to best satisfy HIT regulations published by organizations and governments.  With a more global focus, and in alliance with HIMSS, CCHIT will also develop new programs and policy guidance aimed at achieving interoperability and supporting change in the way providers and patients around the world use IT to positively transform health and healthcare.  As part of this change, CCHIT will no longer offer ONC testing and certification services, or its independently developed certification programs.  Click the link to learn more.

President Obama’s State of the Union Emphasizes Non-Healthcare Agenda
President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 28th highlighted issues important to the President, such as income inequality, gun violence, and the military withdrawal from Afghanistan.  Health information technology did not receive a direct mention in the speech.  Click the link to read more.

Congressional Affairs

Congress, HIMSS Focus on Job Opportunities for Veterans
Congress continues to focus on workforce development opportunities for our nation’s veterans as evidenced by the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs hearing this week, entitled, “What can the Federal Government Learn from the Private Sector’s Successful Approach to Hiring Veterans?” The HIMSS Veterans Career Services Initiative is similarly focused on capitalizing on workforce development opportunities in the health IT space for the nation’s growing veteran population.  Click the link to learn more, including HIMSS14 opportunities for veterans.

Senate Finance Report Describes SGR Repeal Bill
The Senate Committee on Finance has released a report to accompany S 1871, the “SGR Repeal and Medicare Beneficiary Access Act of 2013.”  Click the link to learn more.

Institute for e-Health Policy Educates Congressional Staff on Key HIT Issues
On January 30th the HIMSS Foundation’s Institute for e-Health Policy hosted “Health IT 101: An Overview  of Electronic Health Records, Personal Health Records, ePrescribing, Health Information Exchange, Home Monitoring, Telehealth, and More.” Click the link to learn more.

State Affairs

Speaker Norelli Champions Medicaid Expansion in New Hampshire House
On the first day of the 2014 legislative session in Concord, New Hampshire’s House of Representatives passed House Bill 544 with an amendment that establishes the expansion of access to health care for 58,000 low income working men and women across the state. Health IT Measures in the States

NEW! Davies Public Health Award Call for Submissions
The HIMSS Davies Public Health Award program has opened a call for submissions by public health organizations that have utilized innovative health IT-enabled workflows to improve population health. The Davies Public Health Award highlights the link between improvements in population health and health IT. Submission of case studies to the HIMSS Davies Public Health Award Program requires that applicants submit information which describes how implementation of their and EHR enabled changes in workflow improve the population health of the community they serve. Case Studies will be highlighted on the HIMSS Davies Award and HIMSS Value Suite websites and the HIMSS Blog. To be recognized as a 2014 Davies Public Health Award winner, case studies must be submitted by June 30.

Workshop on Mobile App Development and FDA Regs
The MMA Roadshow, co-sponsored by mHIMSS, will dive deeply into the regulatory issues associated with bringing new mobile apps into the healthcare space. The four-hour program will be hosted across the country in January, March, May and June. HIMSS Seeks Innovator in Residence to work with HHS on Patient Data Matching Strategy
Through HHS’s existing “Innovator in Residence” (IIR) program, HIMSS and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services are collaborating to move forward on the creation of a nationwide patient data matching strategy. HIMSS is currently recruiting an IIR to develop a vision, strategy, and implementation plan for the near-term deployment of consistent patient data matching in health that builds on the body of work from HHS’s Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) and healthcare community partners.  The person hired for this two-year opportunity will be a HIMSS employee who will work onsite in the office of the HHS Chief Technology Officer, to foster further collaboration with stakeholders across the healthcare community and in collaboration with ONC. HIMSS Annual Call for Committee Volunteers Now Open
HIMSS announces its Annual Call for Committee Volunteers for the 2014-2015 fiscal year.  Serving on a HIMSS Committee is an excellent opportunity for professional development, networking and active engagement around key health IT topics, settings and constituencies.  Committee participation is open to all HIMSS members who are not currently serving in other leadership positions within the Society and have maintained active membership for at least the past 12 consecutive months.  Click the link for details or to apply.
