CMS Convenes eHealth Summit to Discuss Critical IT Topics

New CDC Survey of Physicians Shows Continuing Increases in EHR Adoption
The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics this week released “Trends in Electronic Health Record System Use Among Office-based Physicians: United States, 2007–2012.” Click the link above for highlights and to access the report.
FDASIA Stakeholders Meeting Kicks Off
On May 13th, Tom Leary, HIMSS Vice President of Government Relations, represented HIMSS at the FDA/ONC/FCC meeting with Stakeholders to discuss the draft FDASIA Report proposing a Strategy and Recommendations for a Risk Based Framework for Regulating Health IT. “The conversation was incredibly enlightening,” he writes in a blog post. “It goes without saying that the federal agencies have done an incredible job engaging the healthcare community on this important topic, and are willing to have a true dialogue with all stakeholders.” Click the link to read more.

HIMSS Regulatory Chart Tracks Health IT Regulations
The HIMSS regulatory chart offers an at-a-glance snapshot of all health IT-related regulation HIMSS is following in 2014. The chart includes links to proposed and final regulations and to HIMSS comments and position statements, along with anticipated timelines.
Energy & Commerce Committee Member to Address Government Health IT Conference
Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX), a physician, will offer a keynote address to attendees of the Government Health IT Conference and Exhibition in Washington DC on June 18th, providing a Congressional perspective on the potential of health IT. Registration for the conference is free for government employees and veterans (veterans should contact Amy Justice); early bird discounts for other attendees ends TODAY, May 23rd.
HELP Committee Questions Burwell on Stage 2 Meaningful Use
As noted in last week’s Policy Update, OMB Director, Sylvia Mathews Burwell, President Obama’s nominee for the U.S. health secretary appeared before the Senate over the past two weeks for her confirmation hearings before the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee. House Bill Would Extend EHR Assistance to Behavioral Health Providers and Require DOD/VA Interoperability
H.R. 4574, the “Strengthening Mental Health in Our Communities Act of 2014,” aims to provide resources to individuals with a history of mental illness, and to their families. Click the link to learn about the programs and initiatives proposed by the bill.

Throughout the United States today, over 60 HIMSS Chapter Advocates are actively engaging state legislators through planning and facilitating advocacy outreach campaigns alongside their local chapters. The Chapter Advocacy Roundtable provides a networking and educational opportunity for Chapter Advocates to promote chapter-level advocacy programs at the grassroots level in coordination with the HIMSS advocacy and public policy Board-approved agenda.
