The interoperability Vision Paper, “Connecting Health and Care for the  Nation: A 10-Year Vision to Achieve an interoperable Health IT Infrastructure” stated that ONC will lead in the development of a shared, Nationwide interoperability roadmap. This roadmap will be a platform to ensure stakeholders can connect care, improve health, and develop the health IT ecosystem that can be part of the larger learning health system.

ONC’s Health IT Policy and Standards Committees New Workgroups Unveiled
ONC has established two new workgroups to reorganize the work of the Federal Advisory Committee’s and their current workgroups.

JASON Task Force Holds August Hearing
The JASON report task force heard from 3 panels, one looking at consumer-facing ecosystems , one looking at vendor developers who are dependent upon APIs and the other looking at app providers themselves. These panels covered different dimensions of the JASON Report and different things that the JASON Report targeted as being sort of fundamental aspects of the architecture and the approach that they were proposing and advocating in the report.

CMS Issues Final Rule on Hospital Inpatient Payment Regulation
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule that would update fiscal year (FY) 2015 Medicare payment policies and rates for inpatient stays at general acute care and long-term care hospitals (LTCHs). This rule builds on the Obama administration’s efforts through the Affordable Care Act to promote improvements in hospital care that will lead to better patient outcomes while slowing the long-term health care cost growth.

HIMSS Responds to Wyden/Grassley Letter
Health IT is an essential, foundational element of any meaningful transformation of our nation’s healthcare delivery system. Enabled by continued bipartisan Congressional support and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 (HITECH Act), which authorized the Meaningful Use (MU) Program, the nationwide adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) and health information exchange (HIE) is continuing to increase at an unprecedented rate.

Senate Finance and HELP Committee Hold Discussion on MU Stage 3
Senate Finance and health committees held a bipartisan workgroup with stakeholders to discuss the future of the meaningful use program. Meeting with different groups throughout the recess, the goal is to produce feedback to CMS and ONC on Stage 3 of the meaningful use program.

HIMSS Provider-Payer Community
Share your knowledge on bridging the gap between providers and payers to achieve collaborative care transformation.

An Evolution to Human Factors
I have had the job of a lifetime for the past ten years. I entered healthcare as a critical care nurse and then ventured into a career in the field of quality management. While I found those roles very gratifying, the real enjoyment started when I moved into the field of IT.

Clinicians Bridging the Paper to Electronic World
Over the past five years, health information technology (IT) infrastructure has continued to evolve as electronic health record (EHR) deployment becomes more ubiquitous.

Essentials of the US Hospital IT Market Report Findings
I have a confession to make… I reluctantly got into the healthcare IT industry. While my entire career has been in healthcare, I purposely avoided getting to know the IT side of the business. I wanted my healthcare career to be focused on things that could “really make a difference” in people’s lives.

The Growth of a Field
The term “Medical Informatics” was substituted for “Information Systems” by the National Library of Medicine in 1987. I conducted a search using the term “Medical Informatics” as a major search term and found that of all the articles coded to that term, over half have been published since 2006.
