Congressional Affairs

HIMSS Officially Releases 2014 Congressional Asks
HIMSS released its top three recommendations to the U.S. Congress for 2014.The 2014 HIMSS Congressional Asks represent the key initiatives that HIMSS is focusing on this year. They are specific, actionable requests that the organization hopes to accomplish. Their release on August 26, 2014, demonstrates the organization’s commitment to transforming health through IT.

Student Ambassadors Engage in Health IT
Institute for e-Health Policy provides student learning experiences including Internships and Externship with the HIMSS Government Relations Team in the Washington, DC area.   This year during National Health IT Week, five student ambassadors from Northern VA and DC universities will be participating in various NHIT and HIMSS events.

Federal Affairs

AHRQ Studies MU and Adverse Drug Events
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) funded study found an association between the reduction of hospital-caused adverse drug events and the Meaningful Use program. The study focused on hospitals in the state of Florida and found hospitals that adopted all five core measures of meaningful use for medication management in 2010 had the lowest rate of adverse drug events of all hospitals in the state.

Health IT Standards Committee Holds August Meeting
The Health IT Standards Committee held a virtual meeting to receive updates from ONC and consider recommendations from the Implementation Workgroup on CCDA.

Department of Defense Posts EHR RFP
The Department of Defense has posted the final Request for Proposal on the Defense Healthcare Management System Modernization (DHMSM) to replace their current Electronic Health Record (EHR) with a commercial product. The release of the RFP follows 9 months of dialogue with industry organizations regarding the status and scope of the $11 billion Request for Proposals, including 4 industry days and 3 draft documents organizations could review.

ICD-10 Testing Dates Announced by CMS
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently announced that there will be three different testing weeks leading up to the implementation date for ICD-10.

Blue-Button Used in ONC Pilot to Access Immunization Records
ONC and CDC launched a project in five states that connects a secure and convenient web-based portal to immunization data that can be made available to both health care providers and consumers.

A Proliferation of New Initiatives Bolster the Telehealth Market
The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) held its annual meeting in Baltimore this past May. One of the more remarkable statements heard at the meeting came from ATA President Edward M. Brown, M.D., who predicted that, within the next five years, more than 50 percent of patient visits in North America will be done virtually.

Applying Consumer Best Practices to Increase Online Payments
As the director of admissions at Aspen Valley Hospital, I was concerned we were missing an opportunity to collect the patient portion of medical expenses at the front end of the patient experience, during registration. This missed opportunity required the back office to use multiple statements and follow-up calls to collect the patient portion of their hospital bill.

ICD-10 Final Rule Highlights
As reported by HIMSS Government Relations team on Aug. 1, 2014, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published a final rule on July 31, 2014 to adopt ICD-10-CM/PCS no sooner than Oct. 1, 2015, and continued use of ICD-9-CM through Sept. 30, 2015.

ICD-10 from a Health Plan Perspective: An interview with George V. Vancore, Senior Manager Mandates and Compliance, Florida Blue
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced a final rule establishing Oct. 1, 2015, as the new ICD-10 compliance date and also requires the continued use of ICD-9 CM through September 30, 2015.

National Health IT Week is Sept 15-19th
NHIT Week is a collaborative forum, bringing together relevant healthcare constituents as well as members of Congress and other key decision makers.  Since 2006, HIMSS has welcomed the waning summer months with an entire week dedicated to celebrating the important role that health IT plays in improving healthcare delivery in America. This year, HIMSS is giving extra attention to the task of – "achieving value through interoperability".

Celebrate National Health IT Week in Your Community
National Health IT week brings together information technology and interconnectivity vendors, hospital and provider organizations, payers, pharmaceutical/biotech companies, government agencies, industry / professional associations, and consumer protection groups.
