ONC Releases Interoperability Roadmap—Strives to Enable Interoperability Functions on a Nationwide Level by the End of 2017
On Friday, January 30, 2015, the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) released two documents related to achieving greater health IT interoperability across the healthcare system. 

CMS Announces Consideration of EHR Incentive Program Changes for 2015, Including Reducing the Full-Year Reporting Period
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that it intends to engage in rulemaking this spring to address issues related to the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program.

Health IT Standards Committee Approves Recommendations from Data Provenance Task Force
The task force reviewed the Standards and Interoperability (S&I) Framework Data Provenance Initiative’s (the Initiative’s) published and approved Use Case and executive summary documents to answer specific and targeted questions from ONC.

Thomas Mason, MD, Named ONC Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Mason comes to ONC from the Cook County Health and Hospitals System in Chicago, where he serves as chief medical informatics officer of the Ambulatory and Community Health Network. 


Becomes 28th State to Expand Medicaid
On Tuesday, January 27, Indiana became the 28th State – along with the District of Columbia – to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

Friday, January 30, 2015, the HIMSS Government Relations Team held an informational open house for the media at HIMSS Arlington, VA offices. 

HHS Announces Goals and Timeline for Expanding New Medicare Payment Models
Speaking to key healthcare industry stakeholders on Tuesday, Jan. 26, HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell announced an ambitious plan to shift Medicare away from the fee-for-service payment model toward payment based on quality, value and cost-containment.

FDA Issues Two New Guidance Documents
On Tuesday, January 20, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued guidance documents on general wellness products and medical device accessories. FDA guidance documents only convey the agency’s current thinking on a particular topic and should really only be viewed as recommendations.

Health Subcommittee Holds Two Day Hearing on Permanent SGR Solution
On Wednesday, January 21st, The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health began two days of hearings seeking a permanent solution to the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate meant to control for Medical physician inflation.

Maryland Hosts Legislators During Cocktail Hour
The Maryland HIMSS Chapter held a Cocktail Hour on January 14, opening day for the state legislature, at Harry Browne’s in Annapolis for the Maryland House Health & Government Operations Committee members.

ONC Announces First Chief Health Information Officer
On January 21st, Karen DeSalvo, MD, MPH, MSc, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, announced Michael James McCoy, MD, as the Office of the National Coordinator’s Chief Health Information Officer, a newly created position, effective January 26, 2015.
