Volunteer for HIMSS Committees
The deadline for applications for HIMSS Committees is fast approaching on March 9, 2015.  In this key role, available for a term of two fiscal years, committee volunteers play an instrumental part in leading and executing the strategic initiatives of HIMSS while building a strong network and expanding professional development opportunities. Committee participation is open to all HIMSS members who are not currently serving in other leadership positions within the Society, and have maintained active membership for at least the past 12 consecutive months. Apply now and be part of a movement dedicated to transformation and advancement of health IT.


Senate Intelligence Committee Releases Cybersecurity Draft Legislation
The intent of the legislation is to encourage both the public and private sectors to work together to increase information sharing about network attacks with the hope of preventing future breaches.

Congress Watches Administration Net Neutrality Decision Closely  
At issue is how to best protect health IT capabilities by ensuring an open Internet.

House considers Bill to Modify Meaningful Use
The House Ways and Means Committee marked up the bill this week that would exempt patient encounters in ambulatory surgery centers from counting toward meaningful use requirements. 

Senate HELP Committee to Hold Hearings on EHRs and Health IT
The hearing will be Thursday, March 5, 2015, at 10:00 AM, in Room 430 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. 

House Members Introduce the FDA Safety over Sequestration Act
The legislation would ensure user fees paid by drug and medical device manufacturers are used for their intended purpose, to supplement the Food and Drug Administration budget appropriated by Congress to perform the agency’s mission. 

Congress Hears about Behavioral Health Providers and Health IT
As Congress considers the state of the mental health system, Members are also hearing from the  behavioral health industry on a long standing oversight in the HITECH Act(American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, (ARRA (Pub.L. 111-5) included HITECH (Pub.L. 111-5) (ARRA or "Stimulus bill"). 

The Institute Holds Information Technology for Post-Acute and Long Term Care Briefing
The session provided an opportunity for the expert panel to discuss how care continuity is critically important in improving health delivery efficiency and quality.


DoD Down-Selects Proposals for DHMSM EHR Project
Five proposals were originally submitted for this project, and DoD just announced that it would be focusing on three proposals going forward.

CMS Extends 2014 Attestation Deadline for Medicare Eligible Professionals to March 20, 2015
CMS extended the deadline to allow providers extra time to submit their meaningful use data. CMS continues to urge providers to begin attesting for 2014 as soon as they can.

CMS also Announces Extension for EPs participating in PQRS via EHR and QCDR (QRDA III format)
CMS is also pleased to announce that the submission deadlines for the PQRS reporting methods below have been extended.

FCC Approves Net Neutrality Rules
On Thursday, February 26th, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), by a vote of 3 to 2, approved sweeping changes to how it regulates the Internet, capping more than a year of noisy debate that sparked millions of public comments and drew the attention of President Barack Obama and congressional leaders.

ONC Presents Webinars on New Funding Opportunities
ONC recently announced three grant funding opportunities worth $36.1M in an effort to bolster interoperability as described in the Shared Nationwide Interoperability Roadmap, improve workforce training and address community health challenges at the population level.


NY Senate Passes Legislation Targeting Cyber Terrorism
On February 25, the New York State Senate passed four bills to crack down on cyber terrorism and its rapidly expanding threat to the state’s security and finances.

MD Advocacy Day: Health IT in Action! Enabling Maryland to Achieve the Triple Aim
On February19, over one hundred members of the Maryland Chapter of HIMSS spent the day in Annapolis visiting Senators and Delegates to discuss the importance of supporting the transformation of healthcare through the use of consumer engaging HIT.

CMS Calls ICD-10 Testing Successful
CMS has released ICD-10 testing results.

International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10) Acknowledgement Testing and End-to-End Testing (FAQ)
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is offering acknowledgement testing for current submitters to prepare for the October 1, 2015 compliance date of ICD-10.

2015 Security Breach Legislation
The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) recently reported that at least 21 states have introduced or are considering security breach notification legislation in 2015.
