SGR Passage
The effort was a rare showing of bipartisan approval, particularly in the area of healthcare which has been increasingly contentious as a result of the passage of the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). 

Advancing Telehealth Through Connectivity
The purpose of the hearing was to examine the progress made by both the public and private sectors on expanding access to telehealth, particularly in rural areas. 

Congressional Staff Addresses Congressional Perspective at HIMSS15
HIMSS15 in Chicago was a huge success with 43,129 registered attendees.  One of the many interesting education sessions with the Congressional Staff Panel Discussion on Tuesday morning. 

Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-IL) Addresses HIMSS15 Public Policy Leaders Networking Dinner
Representative Robin Kelly (D-IL/2nd), chair of the Congressional Black Caucus’ Health Braintrust for the 114th Congress addressed a crowd of congressional staffers, government officials, and policy advocates on health IT potential to reduce cost and increase access to healthcare.

Congresswoman Randy Hultgren (R-IL/14th) Addresses HIMSS15 Public Policy Leaders Welcoming Reception
Last week at HIMSS15 in Chicago, Representative Randy Hultgren from Illinois 14th Congressional District stopped by to welcome over 60 health IT thought leaders and policy advocates to the Windy City to kick off the HIMSS Annual Conference. 

Senate Finance Committee Holds Hearing on Medical Device Tax
The Medical Device Tax was a major component of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act 2010 (ACA) signed by the President on March 23, 2010 (PL 111-148, PL 111-152) designed to help finance the expansion of healthcare across the country.  The device is a 2.3 percent excise tax on medical device sales, not on a tax on profits.

On Wednesday, April 22, the Health IT Standards Committee, a Federal Advisory Committee to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), convened for a face to face meeting in Washington, D.C.

New CMS NPRM Offers Significant Meaningful Use Flexibility in 2015 through 2017 Program Years
Building off of the programmatic changes that CMS is proposing for Meaningful Use Stage 3 beginning in 2017, this new rule is attempting to reduce reporting burden, eliminate redundant and duplicative reporting, better align the objectives and measures of meaningful use, and focus Stages 1 and 2 of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Programs on advanced use of EHR technology.

Funding Opportunity Announcement for Community Interoperability and HIE Program
Grant funding would assist communities in supporting and enabling the flow of health information by helping to free health information and better utilize community resources.

VA Open Source Community Update Scheduled
The session, broadcast via WebEx, will include presentations by OSEHRA, the VA's Open Source Management Office (OSM), and the Healthcare Services Platform Consortium (HSPC).

Celebrating Success
April 13-16 was the 22nd annual HIMSS Conference. Nearly 43,000 attendees participated in a combined total of 600-plus educational, on-line and exhibitor sessions over the course of the four-day annual event, including our own ICD-10 and Revenue Cycle Improvement Task Force events.

The accurate and complete assignment of diagnosis codes is contingent upon having good clinical information documented in the patients’ medical record.
