Interoperability Report Reflects Biggest IT Challenge
The Gary and Mary West Health Institute, a non-profit medical research organization, recently sponsored HCI-DC 2014, a conference co-hosted by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) that brought together experts from across the healthcare community to consider how interoperability can cut costs, improve efficiency, reduce errors and improve health. Out of the conference came the report Igniting an Interoperable Health System.

Setting Healthcare Interop On Fire
There's a new software standard for sharing health data that's gaining a lot of interest and support. Still classified as a "prototype", Fast Health Interoperable Resources or FHIR (pronounced 'fire') has drawn early interest, and it is more than just curiosity. The excitement was clearly evident at HIMSS14 in February. With no less than 41 sessions on the topic of interoperability at the conference, the second annual Interoperability & Standards Committee Networking Breakfast and Panel was notable for its exclusive focus on FHIR and the expert panel assembled for the discussion.

Innovation Center and Technology Showcase - Becoming a Hub of Activity
In April, the seventh annual Ohio Health IT Advocacy Day was held at the HIMSS Innovation Center in Cleveland. This event was streamed live, enabling participants from across the country to view the lectures and activities. Some upcoming events include the June MMA Roadshow, a CPHIMS Review Course and an IHE Infusion Interoperability Workshop. The Center continues to attract new collaborators and to expand the health information exchange demonstrations and exhibits in the Technology Showcase. FDASIA Workshop Details Announced
Following the recent publishing of the long-awaited FDASIA Health IT Report by FDA, ONC and FCC, the agencies have announced an interactive workshop to be held May 13-15 titled "Proposed Risk-Based Regulatory Framework and Strategy for Health Information Technology."

CONNECT Project Now an Open Source Community
The Federal Health Architecture Program has announced that "As part of the program’s development, CONNECT is no longer a federated program. Open Health Tools (OHT), a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization that governs open source communities and provides a framework for individuals, vendors and government to collaborate on health IT projects, has taken on the responsibility of governance and code management of CONNECT."

Strong Start in First 90 Days of EFT Program
CMS announced results from the first three months of the newly adopted CAQH Committee on Operating Rules for Information Exchange (CORE) standard operating rules for healthcare electronic funds transfers (EFTs).

Health Story Project Becomes a HIMSS Roundtable
The Health Story Project began in 2006 as an alliance of healthcare vendors, providers and associations to create healthcare data standards. In September 2013, Health Story joined HIMSS. In 2014, the Health Story Project, now a HIMSS Roundtable, plans to work towards widespread use of existing basic information standards to fill the gaps in meaningful use by working with clinicians making the transition to electronic health records (EHR). The Health Story Project Roundtable held its kick-off call in April. The next Health Story Project Roundtable call will be held on Monday, May 5. NCPDP WG10 has developed a guidance document for the pharmacy sector when using two Health Level Seven International (HL7) consolidated CDA document templates as the vehicle in capturing and exchanging pharmacy clinical information.
