CMS Issues Request Availability and Pre-certification of Medicaid Information Management System Modules Information
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a request for information (RFI) on Tuesday, June 14, entitled Modular Solutions for Medicaid IT Enterprise and Pre-certification of Solutions. CMS provides states with $5 billion each year to develop and maintain their Medicaid Management Information Systems (MMIS). CMS is promoting modular architectures and solutions for state Medicaid enterprise systems in order to encourage the re-use of technical solutions among states, minimize customization and configuration and increase competition in the Medicaid enterprise marketplace. CMS is especially interested in the development of modules aimed at improving care management and heath information exchange for state Medicaid agencies and for other agencies providing person-centered services and benefits. With this RFI, CMS seeks public input regarding the availability of modular solutions for Medicaid enterprise systems, specifically for clinical data warehouse and identity management modules. CMS is also soliciting input on the possibility of pre-certification for such modules in order to streamline the development and certification of MMIS. Responses will inform CMS strategic direction, future Medicaid enterprise architecture decisions, policies and processes and future guidance issued to the states and to vendor communities. RFI responses are due by Thursday, July, 14.

Healthcare IT News creates a 'room of one's own' for women in health IT
The results of a 2015 HIMSS survey of 20,000 women in health IT on workplace, job satisfaction, recognition and opportunities to move up – coupled with another on salaries for women in this field compared with compensation for men – spoke clearly to HIMSS Executive Vice President Carla Smith. Both surveys revealed pressing needs for resources and community for women in health IT. As part of a robust strategy, Healthcare IT News launched a dedicated section of the website "a room of one's own," so to speak – exclusively focused on news, career advice, profiles, success stories and recognition of women in health IT and the issues that are most pressing.  In addition, a Women in Health IT newsletter is being launched. Be part of the conversation and receive monthly updates on the progress being made to close the gender gap in health IT.

HIE Patient Engagement Case Studies
Patient engagement in healthcare has recently become a priority as the nation moves toward achieving improved patient outcomes… The 2016 HIMSS HIE inPractice Task Force embarked on this initiative to discover ways that Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) implement, collaborate, and engage patients on behalf of the HIE. The HIMSS Task Force decided that the best way to accomplish this would be to highlight what others have done and share their success strategies and lessons learned.

HIE Sustainability Models Survey Shows Positive Future Outlook
Mari Greenberger, director, informatics, HIMSS North America, shares insights on the HIE Sustainability Models Survey. “HIE sustainability and its impact is a topic that continues to generate a lot of interest within the health IT industry as there isn’t a clear answer. The FY16 HIE inPractice Task Force decided to explore this topic and asked the question ‘what makes an HIE sustainable over the long term?’ In an effort to learn more, the Task Force created a brief survey to ask the HIOs within the HIMSS HIE Community how they have been working towards sustainability. The results showed that several HIOs are feeling positive about their future. When it comes to building a sustainable HIE, we have learned that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, but with the right mindset and passion for doing what is best for the patient, I share in the task force’s confidence that HIEs will continue to play an integral role within our health landscape for several years to come.” See the HIE Sustainability Models survey results and analysis.

Health Information Technology is firmly within the domain of those who provide health care. Physicians, nurses and others document our care encounters. Increasingly, however, we hear of creating a patient-centric health care system, and a lot of smart people are trying to figure out this thing we call “patient engagement.” Is there a role for patients and their families in the provision of care? How can we leverage technology to do that?  In this episode, we hear from a caregiver on how health IT supports & doesn’t support caring for her parents in their fight against Alzheimer’s disease. For more information on the HIMSS STEPS™ framework, visit Share your thoughts, your own value story or ask a question at Listen to the episode here: Creating Value for Caregivers from HIT.
