Meet an Informaticist

By John Lee, MD; Physician Symposium Planning Committee and Moderator, 2018 HIMSS Global Conference & Exhibition

When I first became involved with electronic health systems 12 years ago, the physicians who were pulled off paper fairly uniformly would have gone back to paper if they had been given the choice. We have made tremendous advances since then and most physicians now recognize the utility of electronic health records (EHR).

When I began my pharmacy school journey in 2001, I was not aware of the diversity in career paths I could choose as a medical professional. Like many other pharmacy students, I believed that I could pick one of two tracks after graduation to include working in a hospital or retail community pharmacy. My view quickly changed thanks to a mentor.
State of the Industry
By Paul Dexter, MD, Research Scientist, Center for Biomedical Informatics, Regenstrief Institute, Inc. and Shaun Grannis, MD, MS, Interim Director and Research Scientist, Center for Biomedical Informatics, Regenstrief Institute, Inc.

A critical issue in biomedical informatics is electronic health record (EHR) usability. ONC recently dialed back the rigors of its EHR certification attestation requirements in a move to put greater focus on interoperability. While some cite the impact to patient safety, standards have afforded safeguards to protect patients from harm, giving providers actionable information at the point of care. In this session, we will examine the impact and opportunity for three NCPDP standards to move the needle on health outcomes – from wellness and prevention to chronic/specialty care and our national opioid epidemic.
