State Affairs

There are a number of sessions and events at HIMSS18 that highlight grassroots advocacy and model state practices.

At Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), core values such as excellence, teamwork and passion are the driving elements that help the organization evolve and maintain focus on continuous improvement for patients. The implementation of an integrated electronic medical record (EMR) allowed HSS to identify and make changes that would not have been possible previously; for example, allowing teams of practitioners to develop an even better Interdisciplinary Plan of Care customized to the needs of each patient.

When I first became involved with electronic health systems 12 years ago, the physicians who were pulled off paper fairly uniformly would have gone back to paper if they had been given the choice. We have made tremendous advances since then and most physicians now recognize the utility of electronic health records (EHR).

HIMSS is committed to empowering our military and veteran population with knowledge regarding professional development and employment opportunities within the health information and technology industry. The goal of the HIMSS Veterans Career Services (VCS) Initiative is to welcome transitioning military veterans into the health information and technology field – a growing and promising area for technologically adept veterans.

When a 43-year-old patient with significant hip, back and knee pain was scheduled for total hip replacement at Mercy Hospital St. Louis in November 2017, he had no idea what was happening behind the scenes to make sure his surgery went smoothly.
