Congressional
 
 
At the markup, which follows a series of hearings that examined more than 65 pieces of legislation, the Committee voted to favorably report 25 opioid-related bills out of committee.
 
 
 
HIMSS for several years has urged Congress to address the impact of the UPI prohibition.
 
 
 
HIMSS focused on how health information and technology has the potential to address the many challenges facing the physical, mental and fiscal health of our nation, including reducing growth in spending, responding to the opioid crisis, and improving care outcomes for patients with chronic conditions. 
 
Federal Affairs
 
 
HIMSS continues to support CMS’s telehealth advancements to develop and test new models for the delivery of healthcare services in rural areas through improving access the delivery of healthcare, as noted in our  letter to CMS in the fall of 2017.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
State Affairs
 
 
This year, the chapters’ advocacy asks focused on telehealth, the opioid crisis, veteran suicide, and workforce development.
 
 
 
HIMSS through its State Advisory Roundtable has prioritized this topic and is engaging state officials and chapter advocates in Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and southeastern US to provide thought leadership and model practices that may be useful in preparing states/territories for natural disasters.

Health Data Management is announcing the 50 women selected for its 2018 Most Powerful Women in Healthcare IT recognition program.

Those selected for the awards fall into three categories: CIOs/HIT executives, thought leaders and HIT vendor executives. Honorees were selected from a field of candidates who were nominated by HIT executives in the industry or by HDM’s editors.
 
 
 
The theme of  National Nurses Week this year is Inspire, Innovate, Influence. To me, these concepts are the essence of leadership in nursing.

Something I hear a lot from nurses is, “I don’t have much power because I just work at the bedside.”
 
 
 
Health Data Management (HDM) magazine announced its  2018 Most Powerful Women in Healthcare IT, 50 female executive leaders including Carla Smith, executive vice president of HIMSS, founder and champion of the HIMSS Women in Health IT program. The impressive list also includes 30 women who are members of HIMSS. Smith also received this honor last year from HDM and appeared as one of the 2017 Most Powerful Women in HIT.
 
 
 
As a nursing informatics specialist, the journey to build a body of knowledge and wisdom has been a winding path through travel, experiences and education.
