Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health
Päivi SILLANAUKEE (MD, PhD, eMBA) is the Director-General of the Department of Wellbeing and Services of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health of Finland. Earlier in the Ministry she served as the Permanent Secretary in 2012 – 2019 and Director General in 2008 - 2012. Previously Dr Sillanaukee was Deputy Mayor and Director of Social and Health Services in the City of Tampere, Finland.
She has worked on policies to promote public health, social protection and gender equality in the European Union and global levels. She has represented Finland in the WHO Executive Board since May 2018 and is currently serving as its Vice Chair. She is the co-chair of the Alliance for Health Security Cooperation (AHSC) and a member of the Steering Group of the Global Health Security Agenda.
Dr Sillanaukee has a key leadership role in the national Covid-19 response in Finland, including ensuring the continuity of health and social care services and strengthening testing capacity. Dr Sillanaukee’s department is in charge of the infectious disease and pharmaceutical legislation, as well as a broad range of legislation regarding the implementation of new technologies (data privacy, biobanks, the Genome Centre).
