Visualizing Health Data: Finding Signals in the Noise

A tech industry and HCI pioneer, Dr. Ben Shneiderman’s foundational perspectives on interface design and information visualization continues to influence the ever-increasing digitized world we live in. Join us for an hour with this ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Achievement Award winner as he discusses data visualization in healthcare, and recent two recent Human-Computer Interaction Lab projects: (1) Twinlist (www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/sharp/twinlist) , a medication reconciliation interface with staged animation and meaningful spatial layouts, and (2) EventFlow (www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/eventflow), a novel interactive visual analytics tool for event sequences that enables users to get an overview of many patient histories, then focus on specific event sequences that could indicate which treatments lead to more successful outcomes.
