TIGER Initiative for Technology and Health Informatics Education

Focusing on education reform, interprofessional community growth and global workforce development, the Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform (TIGER) initiative offers tools and resources for learners to advance their skills and for educators to develop technology and health informatics curricula.

By providing the needed resources to integrate technology and health informatics into education, clinical practice and research, the TIGER initiative helps prepare the next generation of global healthcare professionals to improve patient care. The spirit of TIGER is to maximize the integration of technology and health informatics into seamless practice, education, research, and resource development. We do this through:

Communication and Collaboration
Encourage standardized, person-centered and technology-enabled processes to facilitate teamwork and relationships across the continuum of care.

Foster a respectful learning community of diverse stakeholders that embrace shared values to drive innovation and technology.

Create an environment that maximizes the possibilities of technology toward knowledge development and dissemination, driving rapid implementation of best practices.

Management and Leadership
Enable leadership to drive, empower and execute the transformation of healthcare.

Global Health Informatics Recommendations

While informatics recommendations on competencies and education support the design of curricula and courses, they are unable to inform educators on how to customize content for local needs and requirements. That’s why the TIGER International Competency Synthesis Project (ICSP) and the EU*US eHealth Work Project came together to describe and validate the TIGER Initiative’s framework of global informatics core competencies for health professionals.

Together, these projects compiled a recommendation framework of health informatics competencies (v2.0) to measure, inform, educate and advance development of a skilled workforce throughout the European Union (EU), U.S. and around the world. Although the EU*US eHealth Work Project has ended, we are currently compiling global case studies to continue bringing our findings to life, with a focus on all states within the EU.

Informatics Definitions

The TIGER initiative’s informatics definitions provide context to commonly used informatics terms within the global health community. As the field continues to grow and change, this resource will evolve as well, serving as a helpful tool for those learning about informatics and informatics competencies. 


Virtual Learning Environment

The TIGER initiative’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is an interactive, online learning platform for academic professionals, students, adult learners and clinical educators. This personalized learning experience—containing courses and webinars—expands knowledge and skillset in a self-paced format. From within the VLE, access resources and modules to incorporate into curricula, earn continuing education credits and obtain certificates of completion.

The TIGER VLE requires a $65 subscription and includes unlimited access for one year along with the webinar series and archive. Access to the Health IT Foundations course requires an additional $35 fee.

TIGER International Task Force
The TIGER International Task Force (TITF) provides our global community of 29 countries with knowledge, leadership and guidance in its efforts to reform technology and health informatics education. The task force provides domain expertise, leadership, and guidance to activities, projects, and collaborations within the interprofessional community to support faculty, students, adult learners, and providers.

TIGER Scholars Workgroup
The TIGER Scholars Workgroup is a forum for the academic informatics community to share knowledge, theory and experience on technology and health informatics education—informing best practices for teaching, learning, and assessment of current & future health professionals.

TIGER Virtual Learning Environment Workgroup
The TIGER VLE Workgroup helps keep the initiative’s online learning platform up to date, streamlined and intuitive for those seeking to expand their health informatics knowledge and skillset. A priority of the workgroup is to increase access to current high-quality technology and informatics resources for the interprofessional community.
