History of the Immunization Integration Program (IIP)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), through a contract with Chickasaw Nation Industries, brought experts and stakeholders together to identify software capabilities that would improve usability and support clinical workflows related to immunizations, and enhance information sharing between clinicians and immunization information systems (IIS). The HIMSS Immunization Integration Program (IIP) was developed out of this shared common vision of advancing immunization-related software capabilities to improve health outcomes, reduce costs and increase clinician productivity. To achieve this vision, the collaborating organizations are educating the healthcare community on how the use of EHRs and other types of health IT can increase the effectiveness of interventions that improve immunization rates, such as provider reminders, standing orders, provider assessment and feedback processes, and patient reminders. The CDC believes that improving immunization-related functions and usability of EHRs and other clinical software will improve the level of appropriate immunizations, thereby positively impacting public health.
Under a subsequent contract with the CDC, HIMSS, Drummond Group and Chickasaw Health Consulting – a subsidiary of Chickasaw Nation Industries – are publishing, disseminating and gaining input on software capabilities, guidance and testing tools designed to integrate immunization-related capabilities within EHRs and other clinical software. These capabilities, guidance and tools were informed by a literature review; interviews with and surveys of stakeholders; numerous working sessions with clinicians, software developers and experts; members of a technical advisory panel; and pilot testing with software vendors.
