The workflow of the hospital, physician practice, or other provider organization changes with the implementation of an EHR. Orders for lab tests and medication orders, for example, move directly from the practitioner's computer to the lab or pharmacy. Turn-around times for fulfilling these orders typically drops, sometimes significantly. Interactions between caregivers change, and patient records are no longer in disarray throughout an office as they await incoming information and test results from other providers. Approaches to workflow re-design are discussed in this section and tools are offered to help the provider through the process.
