Clinical Informatics is an emerging and dynamic area of practice. Although there are several models and examples of competencies in Health Informatics, there are currently no formal, published competencies for Clinical Informatics. The lack of competencies, coupled with a difficult transition from clinical practice to clinical informatics, creates many challenges for Clinical Informaticists (CI). Our research project examined current orientation and professional development processes; reviewed and revised orientation and professional development documents; created competencies for CIs; formalized these competencies into a Competency, Assessment, Planning, and Evaluation (CAPE) tool; and integrated the use of the CAPE tool to record ongoing professional development for CIs.
