This HIMSS Board of Managers includes 12 members; four members from HIMSS North America, and one each from HIMSS Media, HIMSS Analytics, HIMSS Europe and HIMSS Asia Pacific, plus three additional members with expertise in finance and/or international governance. The director members of the HIMSS Board of Managers serve a three-year term with the President/CEO of HIMSS recognized as an ex-officio member. In addition, HIMSS North America, HIMSS Analytics, HIMSS Media and HIMSS International each operate as a separate business unit, and under the guidance of their own respective board of directors, within the HIMSS Enterprise.
"I am honored to be Chair of the HIMSS Board of Managers. I succeed Ms. Allana Cummings, who did an outstanding job as the inaugural chairperson," said Dr. Steltenkamp. "This year we need to complete the transition to be a fully vested board with representation from each of the subsidiary boards. Many may not realize the breadth and depth of the HIMSS organization across the globe."
HIMSS has offices in Europe and Asia Pacific with in-person conferences in those locations as well as North America, South America and the Middle East. In addition, the organization's remote programming is available to interested attendees located anywhere with access to the internet.
"We must continue our efforts to optimize health engagements and care outcomes using information technology," said Dr. Steltenkamp. "The HIMSS Board of Managers will work to guide our membership; individual, organizational, and corporate across the globe to understand their opportunity for collaboration in innovation and action within health IT."
Dr. Steltenkamp brings both her experience as a practicing physician and CMIO to this role. "I will be part of a Medical Brigade to Santo Domingo Ecuador in August. That clinic, located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains has an operational EHR. What a marvelous example of using health IT to improve healthcare---following up on patients in Ecuador after we return to the US. My experience as a physician fuels my passion for this work," said Dr. Steltenkamp.
"As the Vice Chair of the HIMSS Board of Managers, I feel proud, and I feel humble. I feel humble, because HIMSS has to listen to the needs of all actors of the healthcare system, and ultimately, to patients and their health. I feel proud because HIMSS is an organization that never forgets to put education, evidence-based science and evaluation at the forefront. This is important, because as a physician, I consider health IT similar to a powerful treatment: if it can save lives, it can also have important, unexpected effects. HIMSS and the Board of Managers understand this challenge, and this is how we all work at developing and sharing global knowledge and expertise to improve health with IT," said Christian Lovis, MD, MPH, Vice Chair, HIMSS Board of Managers; and Professor and Chair, Division of Medical Information Sciences, University Hospitals of Geneva, University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland.
