On Thursday, February 16th, Senate Finance Committee Chairman, Orrin Hatch (R-UT) led a confirmation hearing for Trump Administration CMS Nominee, Seema Verma. Ms. Verma is a healthcare consultant, who is credited with being an architect of the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) and assisting other states as they established programs to extend healthcare coverage in response to Affordable Care Act requirements.
The Committee member questions and dialogue focused primarily on healthcare delivery and expectations for CMS as the healthcare system shifts to value-based care delivery. From a health IT perspective, Ms. Verma offered thoughts on the importance of meeting provider and policy maker expectations on interoperability, and reinforced the need for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation to foster innovation and share the findings from their grants and pilot programs. The hearing is available on the Senate Finance website.
